Black Garage Door Reveal Inspiration Inspo Side Entry Three Car Garage Transitional Home Style

I have never had a garage.  First world problem… I know.  But lately I have either been aging rapidly (which is likely the cause)…or winters in Pennsylvania are just getting colder and colder each year– at any rate- Please send me some help… some moral support… (or a free vacation to Mexico!)  I am so hopeful that next year at this time, I will be getting into a warmer vehicle when I leave my house.  It will be a small joy I will never take for granted for the the rest of my life.  Now, I must admit- there is something in this garage owning process I am very fearful of– and that would be watching my three garage bays get filled to the max with “junk”– because I happen to know many people who can’t park in their garages.  (And If you are one of those people– I can assure you– my blog is a judgment free zone… I promise.)

My garage doors for #thelaydenlegacy have finally arrived and I’m so in love.   So, tell me- are you a fan of black garage doors?  And then answer the million dollar question–  if you have a garage, can you actually park your vehicle in it?  I’m so excited to reveal our garage doors.  With temps here near freezing, we must wait until spring for the stucco work to be done… so in the meantime, I hope you will enjoy the view of our three new beautiful black garage doors from Haas.  In the meantime, allow me to answer some commonly asked questions about my garage doors…

Why did I choose Black Garage Doors?

When we decided to go with black window frames for our new construction, the first thing that came to my mind was… What color would I choose for the garage doors and all the other doors in our home?  I really didn’t think I wanted three huge black garage doors or any black doors for that matter.  I just couldn’t envision what the house would look like with SO much black.  We have a front door, 3 garage doors, 1 man door, 1 double man door, one single french door, and three double French doors.  All I could think of was that is SO many doors and SO much black.  After talking it over with my interior designer, she assured me that it wouldn’t be too much black and I would more than likely love the final result.   For those of you that are building or plan too some day- I would highly suggest three things.

1.) Hire an interior designer.  It’s worth every penny.  Trust me!   You can read about my experience with hiring an interior designer here.

2.)  Take my advice and use the same window frame color for the interior and exterior of the home.  It is what makes a beautiful transition from the exterior to the interior.

2.) Match the window frame color to the doors.  Naturally, since I decided on black window frames, it only made sense that I also choose black doors.  Now- I totally think for the garage doors and/or the front door, I could have went with a warm wood color and its would also probably have looked great, so again- each house is different (and there are exceptions to my point…) but now that I see our home coming together, I cannot imagine it any color other than black.  I just think the black looks so beautiful, and I’m so happy with my selection.

How hard is it to choose the perfect garage door style for your home?

HARD.  Very very hard. Lol.  When I began looking at the style of garage doors, again, I had NO idea that so many styles existed, and they ALL looked completely different.   At the start of my search, I quickly found out the style I liked best was solid wood and opened outward, as in carriage door style.   One price quote later, I learned that those kind of doors were completely out of the budget!  Not only was I heartbroken, but it took me THAT much longer to find a garage door style that I truly loved.

Luckily, most garage door companies have an online tool that allows you to actually upload a picture of your home and put the proposed garage doors in the opening.  This allowed me to see what the garage doors would look like before purchasing.  Keep this tip in mind if you are searching for new or replacing existing garage doors.  This tool was wonderful and saved me almost ordering a door I wouldn’t have loved.

When I finally decided on black garage doors, I realized quickly that not all companies manufacture every garage door style in black.  Also, many styles that did come in black were way too modern for my liking.  With that being said, selecting the perfect garage doors was a true pain!

What was I looking for in a garage door?

MY GARAGE DOOR WISH LIST

  1. Black
  2. Look like real wood.
  3. Mimic carriage doors.
  4. Have larger windows.
  5. Have a plain front panel.

This should be easy to find and select, right?  Here are some black garage door views that inspired me.  Images via Pinterest.  If you know the owner, please contact me so I can give credit.

What size are my garage bays?

I have been asked often, what size are my garage door openings. Each opening is 10 feet wide by 9 feet high.  Although this will be wonderful for my awful driving skills, the minute I made those door openings larger,  I went away from stock sizes– and if you know anything about custom home building– custom equals MORE MONEY.  I learned early on– (of course after our plan was already finalized) that anything custom will cost you more- whether it’s window sizes, door sizes, more electrical options, etc. and my garage doors were no exception.  If you are building, I know it can be tempting to go away from standard sizing, but if you want to save money (or stay on budget), I highly recommend sticking to standard.

Where did I order my garage doors from?  What brand and style are they?

For those of you that are local, I ordered my garage doors from Penn Central Door in Dubois, Pennsylvania.  They were wonderful.  They only carry the best brands in garage doors and are so knowledgeable and pleasant to work with .  If you contact them, tell Teddy that Jessica sent you!

Haas was the manufacturer of the garage doors I chose.  The garage doors I selected were Haas Door, Model 930, Glazed 3 Pane Arch Style– Black on Black.   These doors are excellent in quality, look beautiful and although they definitely weren’t the cheapest garage doors out there, I found them to be an excellent value for how gorgeous they look.  I finally found them to be my perfect garage door match (after looking at 1000’s of garage door styles and at least 10 brands!) and my efforts were not in vain– as I truly love them and am so happy with my selection.

Thank you for following along on your journey home.  I appreciate you all so much. Stay tuned for more to come!  If you’re new here- check out the other posts I’ve written about our custom home building journey.
